The Big Five-Oh
This stacked vanilla almond sour cream cake was for a very special birthday celebration. Simple fondant flowers were used to decorate the cake that was filled and iced in vanilla hazelnut buttercream. No "over the hill" theme, here!
Stay tuned for the matching bumpy cupcakes!

Pink, White & Zebra Fondant Cake
Every time I make a cake, it becomes my new favorite. This cake may hold first place for quite some time :)
Another graduation party cake, for another "cousin" of mine! Sloane's party theme was pink & black & zebra stripes. The cake (& cupcakes) fit in perfectly!
This cake was so much fun to make! I had my first experience making the zebra stripes, and I love the way it turned out. The beautiful thing about fondant? It withstood the 90+ degree heat on Saturday!
The bottom layer was chocolate, the middle was pink velvet funfetti, and the top layer was vanilla.
All the layers were filled & iced with vanilla buttercream & covered with homemade marshmallow fondant. The cake was topped with a gumpaste bow.
I also made vanilla & pink velvet funfetti cupcakes (in pink and black zebra striped liners), pictured in the background.
Congratulations, Sloane!!

Tall Cake
My cake decorating classes are limited now that I've completed all three Wilton courses. Thankfully, my instructor told me she was offering a one day class, Tall Cakes. The course was about how to construct stacked cakes & we were instructed to bring a 10" cake and a 6" cake. Until the day of the class, I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the cake, which meant I still hadn't decided how to decorate the cake.
Luckily, my instructor came to my rescue and taught us how to pipe corneille lace. I added a few flowers, and I was set!
The bottom layer is a rich chocolate cake, layered with dark chocolate swiss meringue buttercream and strawberries. The top layer is white almond cake layed with dark chocolate swiss meringue buttercream. The cake was iced in dark chocolate swiss meringue buttercream, or, my new favorite frosting. The lace piping was done with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream. I used royal icing apple blossoms and primroses (look familiar?) for a finishing touch.
